The Indian Government has finally unveiled the new standardised symbol for Ruppe. It’s a combination of Devanagri ‘ra’ and Roman ‘R’. This move will see the use of “Rs.” to mark the rupee currency being slowly phased out. It’s a good move by the Indian government since some other countries are calling their currency as “rupee” as well (e.g. Pakistan and Nepal).
The new symbol, however, will take some time to appear on keyboard or even OS, since the government will have to apply for it to be included in the “Unicode List” managed by the Unicode Consortium. Only after it is approved as a Unicode Standard that the symbol can be used by vendors to include the symbol in their hardware (e.g. keyboard, keypad). Anyway, it is indeed a good move by the Indian government!
