Busy busy week

Posted On Oct 23, 2007 // Lost Paradise//1 Comment

It’s been a crazy week, can barely have enough sleep. Too many things to settle but luckily everything turns out to be better than expected. I have to admit that i don’t really know what to post at the moment, but would love to share Tian Chua’s witty comments on our Space Traveller. Click here to read it. And at the mean time, if you enjoy reading, do spend some time on Barack Obama’s The Audacity of Hope. It’s available on MPH Online as well. It’s slightly expensive (RM94) but worth every single cent you spent for it. He’s the kind of a leader and politician that the world needs and his book is truly inspiring. He give priorities to his race, the HUMAN race. Well, you must be wondering where on earth i find the time to read his book. Haha. I normally do my reading before sleeping, which can take an average of 2 hours everyday. But trust me, it takes a really good book to lure me to finish it within a week! Maybe i’ll do a review on the book in relation to our Malaysian political scenario, just hope i have the time to crack my head for that. :)

XunLei English - Thunder 5

I’m not sure how many of you out there actually uses XunLei or Thunder 5 as your download manager. Well, i have to say, it’s not just any download manager. It’s definitely super fast, both for direct leeching and torrent downloading. While i’ve been a loyal user of uTorrent, i do reckon that XunLei can be super fast when downloading torrent files from international sites like Mininova, Isohunt or Demonoid. And of course, XunLei’s portal (powered by Gougou) also provide links to various torrent files (particularly for chinese-related content, music, TV series, movies).

Below are my personal reviews on XunLei:

  • The speed is amazingly fast.
  • If you’re downloading a torrent with a list of files, especially full episodes from a TV Series, you’ll notice that XunLei will always make sure it download the files according to the rank or sequence. Meaning you get to watch Episode 1 when Episode 2 is still downloading.
  • Always disable UPNP and use the default TCP port (80) to achieve better download speed.
  • XunLei is only in Chinese. Despite that, English translation file is available thanks for the effort of HeHehunter. Do visit his site for the file.
  • Despite its speed, XunLei only work on public trackers as it functions as a “spoof” HTTP reader. Some private trackers will not allow this for security purposes.
  • If you’re downloading from a tracker with ratio limit, XunLei is not recommended as the seeding (uploading) speed can be very slow, hence lower your sharing ratio.
  • XunLei can consume a lot of memory when you’re downloading too many files and it doesn’t integrate well with other download manager.

When Democracy is not the best policy

Posted On Oct 17, 2007 // Current Issues//4 Comments

I was having a healthy (by excluding those swear words in Kelantanese-Malay dialect) debate with a couple of middle-age men yesterday amidst the festive atmosphere of Hari Raya Puasa. The hot topic was initially on the upcoming election but eventually diverted to some political attacks on the current government. They debated on a lot of issues but the justifications they gave are very shallow and “uneducated”. These men may look like a politician when they talk, but their knowledge of the world is very limited. They left school at the age of about 12, and rarely read books. Their main source of information is either from friends’ constant lambasting remarks or news shown on TV. I’m not against their views but the debate yesterday suddenly made me think for a while.

I asked myself: “Is democracy the best policy? Is it the best way forward?” While many would agree that Democracy is perhaps one of the best forms of government, but giving power to people can sometimes be dangerous especially when the people are not ready to be given power to choose or elect. In countries where there are more people uneducated than educated, sometimes when an issue is voted on, wrong opinions are translated into policy while the truth remains widely unknown. More often than not, people vote not because of their own rational thinking but merely based on emotional appeal and sometimes popularity. This may be the reason why some politicians are using “Democracy” as a tool to sustain and protect their positions.

Second Angkasawan in 2 years?

Posted On Oct 14, 2007 // Current Issues//6 Comments

My oh my, after spending around RM90 million to send Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor to space, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation is said to be planning to send the second angkasawan Faiz Khaleed to space, in 2 years time. The Minister, Dato’ Sri Dr. Jamaludin Jarjis, even proudly announced that another competition will be held to select a backup candidate for Faiz Khaleed, the army dentist. Now, i don’t like that word “competition”. It’s like yet another Reality TV show that serves to fulfill one’s dream rather than seriously developing Malaysia’s aerospace industry. Why pre-determined Faiz Khaleed as the second angkasawan? Why can’t we picked those who have committed themselves in aerospace research? Or at least start a proper plan of outlaying national space programme rather than using money to fulfill a nation’s or maybe a person’s dream. We don’t even have enough human capital to develop our own aircraft yet let alone building rockets!

Seriously, nations like Japan, Korea and India, are laughing at how our media has turned an ordinary spaceflight participant into a heroic Cosmonaut. Media in Middle East, on the other hand, are hailing Dr. Sheikh as the first MALAY and the third MUSLIM to go to space. Perhaps, the media in Middle East do not know that his flight is also “sponsored” by money from Chinese, Indian, Kadazan, Iban, Melanau, Bidayuh, Bajau, Penan, Orang Ulu, Dayak, considering that they also pay their income tax. :)

My First Raya Birthday

ikan asam pedas

Well, today marks my 24th birthday, which also means I’ve been in this wonderful world for 24 years and 9 months (in my mom’s womb). It’s also the first time that my birthday falls on 1st day of Syawal, same day as Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Instead of having a birthday cake, I have been “fed” with ketupat, lemang, rendang and raya biscuits. Haha. Since yesterday, my neighbours have been “pouring” in those food. Even this morning, one of my neigbours treated my whole family with her famous nasi lemak + ikan masak asam pedas (see pic). One of my favourites of course! Haha…it’s indeed a fattening birthday. Well, that’s all for now, it’s time to get some more rendang…. :)
