Samsung Galaxy S Text Input Methods – From Swype to DioPen Handwriting

Even without a solid physical QWERTY keypad, messaging and inputting text on Samsung Galaxy S is easy and effortless thanks to the availability of several text input methods. These methods include Swype, on-screen QWERTY keypad as well as Handwriting box (DioPen). I’ll introduce to you these three methods accordingly.

In areas where text input function is available (e.g. text messaging, note entry, search box), just put your finger on the text input area and hold it for about 2 seconds, and you’ll be prompted with a popup box that ask you on the Input Method. As you can see you have three options available. You can also change the keypad types by tapping on the settings icon (gear-wheel symbol).

Sywpe vs Tap (Type)

Swype is indeed one of the best features made available  on Samsung Galaxy S. Instead of tapping on the on-screen keys, you can input words by simply sweep your finger across the keyboard from one letter to the other. There is a visual blue trail that marks your finger movement. The best thing is it doesn’t matter if you somehow touch on other keys when you’re “typing” your word as the Swype dictionary will recognize the word that you wanted to enter. Even when it couldn’t, a popup box containing some suggested words would appear. Swping is indeed much faster than tapping once you get used to it especially for people with “fat fingers” like me!

The standard QWERTY keypad also allows you to input Chinese characters. You can enter the words by using PinYin. I must say, inputting Chinese characters has never been so easy! Haha.

Handwriting Box and 3×4 Keypad

There is also another input method under DioPen Chinese IME, which will also activate the handwriting box. You can either get a “stylus pen” or simply “write” on the box using your finger. The version I have on the Samsung Galaxy S supports both English and Chinese but I was told Korean language is available in the Korean market as well. This should come in handy when you need to “write” the Asian characters.

Besides that, if you’re really uncomfortable with the QWERTY keypad, you can also switch to the conventional 3×4 keypad, just that you need to tap more often. 🙂

Well, all in all, the input methods available on Samsung Galaxy S can fit all kinds of users. Depending on one’s preference. I am personally hooked with Swype though. Text messaging via Swype is very swift and accurate! Perhaps, you should give it a try.

  • Hi , i recently bought samsung galaxy S , but i don't know how to input chinese word when creating a new message .can you teach me?
    thks!!

  • Hi sishu, do you have DioPen Chinese IME included? Change your text input method to DioPen Chinese IME. Then click on the "12#" symbol on the keypad to change the text input range to PinYin.

  • Oh god. it took me an hr to figure out what was wrong with my Chinese settings. turned out i accidentally ticked the option "use fuzzy" and that lead to a different sort of pinyin =.= anyway, i think the Swype function is a waste of time. i've been experimenting for abt 1/2hr and i think long nails are a big no no if u want to use this option. Nails VS Swype. I think i'll just forgo Swype.

    • Haha...Swype comes in handy when you need to type in full word. For short forms, or sms language, it's rather waste of time. And with nails, you can just tap on the keypad. :)

    • HI Dhaya,

Go to any textbox (e.g. message area), press the screen and hold for a few seconds, the "select input method" will appear. Or go to Settings>Locale and Text.Change the settings there.

Let me know if you can't change it.

  • hello, followed the steps you provided but i am still unable to input chinese text. i can't seem to find the pinyin function... =(

    • Pin Yin version is only available on Asian version of Samsung Galaxy S. Maybe you don't have it built in. You can however download Google Pinyin from the Android Market.

  • Hi KeeMan,
got my galaxy s today in germany and was really disappointed when I realized that there seems to be no possiblity to write chinese on the device (got the german software version...) thanks for your tip with google pinyin, but still I'd like to use the device as a dictionary where I can search for chinese characters just by writing the character(when i dont know the pinyin). Is there any possibility? I heard something about flashing the device and use the chinese firmware but I have no idea how to do that

    warm regards
    kai

    • Germany should be getting the international version, with contains no Asian languages. Yes, you might want to root your Galaxy S and install the Asian Firmware, but this is not advisable since you might damage the Android OS or even the phone. And of course, it voids your warranty.

I think the best option for you now is to download third-party apps. I'll update you when I find a good one apart from Google Pinyin.

  • Thanks a lot KeeMan,
really hope that there will be some handwriting third app for chinese in the near future. I assumed there wouldn't be a problem with samsung since I can use handwriting on my german iPod touch, well thats a point for apple :/

really looking forward for your news, ????

    • Thanks Kai. Yeah, Android app development in rapidly increasing lately, hopefully we get more apps related to Chinese handwriting. :)

  • Hi.... While using SWYPE input Eng, can I change to Handwriting or other Keyboard for Chinese entry? And How.....?????,

  • hey, kenman. i'm using samsung galaxy 5 is running Android 2.1 system as well. I have read your above post instructions . i failed to do it. i have done diopen chinese ime setting and install google pin yin as well. i can't see those applications you mentioned to my phone message keyboard. Could you teach and show me step by step ? i'm appreciated you reply my question. thank you

    • Joanne, for your information, the instruction I give above is for Samsung Galaxy S, it may be differs in Samsung Galaxy 5. But you can explore under Settings>Locale and Text and select the input method you wanted.

  • hi keeman, i was reading the gsm arena review and saw that there is an additional application called "pin" on the text box which helps you navigate easily to your text message just in case you mis spell something. how can i activate or enable it? im from philippines and using galaxy5. thank you! please send a copy of your reply to my e-mail address. thanks so much!

    • I'm not quite sure which app are you referring to. But are you looking for a spellchecker for English?
