iPhone 4 Press Conference: No Recall but Free Case and Same Old Rants

As expected, Apple would not admit their mistake in the engineering of iPhone 4 and the press conference started with the usual Steve Job’s “nice-persuading-words” of Apple did nothing wrong, they love their users, they really really love their users, all phones have this problem, and blah blah blah. Steve Jobs also poured in some “data” to show that the problem is affecting very small percentage of users and explained why antenna strength (or “death grip”) is a problem of all smartphones (I do pity those phones that they have chosen to compare with! Those are old models. Try compare with Droid X or Samsung Galaxy S or HTC Desire). They even create a dedicated microsite on this. Well, if the problem is so small and affecting the rest, why is Apple trying so hard to prove everyone’s wrong?

Ironically, Apple has decided to the solve the iPhone 4 antenna problems by giving away FREE case (which has proven to effectively solve the antenna signal issue) for every purchase of iPhone 4, valid until 30th September 2010. Customers who have bought the phone can claim the free case from Apple’s website beginning late next week. Plus, if you have bought the phone and unhappy with it, you can request for a refund by returning the undamaged iPhone 4 within 30 days.

The fact that Apple is setting the 30th September “deadline” means they are trying to figure out how to solve the problem now, perhaps by introducing another software fix or a redesigned hardware. So iPhone 4 carvers may have to wait after that date to get a “better” iPhone 4.

On another note, Apple has also announced that iPhone 4 will be available in another 17 countries, including Hong Kong and Singapore. There is also reminder on the new iOS4 update (4.0.1) which fixes the signal strength bars display on iPhone.

If you missed the press conference, you can check it out here.
