I needed a new laptop for my 3D projects but at the same time I can’t afford to spend too much that will dig a huge hole on my wallet. Scouted for about a few weeks before I managed to convince myself to go for ASUS N53SV. As part of the N Series, ASUS N53SV is mainly for entertainment and multimedia use, as can be seen the speaker is specifically designed horizontally in the middle. The version I bought is equipped with Intel Core™ i5 2410M, 4GB DDR3 Ram, 640GB Hard disk drive and NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M with 1GB RAM. The full specs for this laptop is available here. So, let me quickly review this new baby.
The laptop looks amazingly sleek with its metallic cover. With its 15.6inch HD screen, its looks kind of heavy. But I was proven wrong as it’s actually very light compared to other 15-16 inch laptops. In fact, it’s lighter than my old 14-inch Lenovo. The boot up is fast and I have no problem running games or application with high-graphic settings since it supports Direct X11. I will probably do a complete benchmark test and update it here later.
The laptop also comes with 4 USB ports and HDMI port. The ventilation system is also highly efficient as you don’t feel the heat even when running heavy graphic software. You can’t hear any noise as well.
The speaker is powered by SonicMaster co-developed by world-famous Bang & Olufsen ICEpower. The sound quality is decent, you don’t really need an extra external speaker to play your favourite music.
As for the keyboard, there is an extra section for the number pad on the right. This is just like having a full keyboard on your laptop. The only issue I have with the keyboard is there is no clear separation for the number pad, causing me to accidently press the num lock key when I wanted to press on the backspace key. I kind of miss the keyboard on Lenovo laptop which is for me one of the best I have used so far.
With the 6-cell battery, the laptop could last for about 2 and a half hours and it could last longer on power saving mode. I guess this is pretty common. For longer period of usage on the go, a 9-cell battery would be a good option.

The ventilation. Something ive never considered when buying a laptop. On my current laptop, you can cook an egg while using it.. No joke!
Hahaha...usually, that's the third thing I consider when I go survey for laptop. You'll see me touching the laptop on display very often. I realise Toshiba, Dell and HP can be very hot for long period. But it might depends on models.
Oh yeah... I went and see Asus latest model the other day. Not bad design... and yep, definately cooler than the rest! waiting for the pc fair to seal the deal.
Yeah, ASUS has come up with several good design and specs lately. I think my model might be slightly cheaper during PC Fair.

I bought mine for RM2,599. Yes, there is another model with i7, i think about 300 extra. I personally like this model because of the performance and usability. Very quiet and you don't feel the heat during heavy usage.
KeeMan, gotta ask, where did you buy your laptop? Did you get at least a 2 year warranty for it?

Hi Jach, so far no problems and it's performing well with games and work. Not sure about Dell XPS, but ASUS N Series has been good.
I have been a month of buying ASUS N43S (14 inches display). Overall i do satisfy especially the sleek and beautiful design, metal alluminium sheet stylish top cover. The most interesting features, high quality and loud speaker plus real surround effect when you play movies.So Great! It is a light weight laptop in its class, sharp, cool vivid display with multi-preset display mode. This model seem really fast to boot in windows 7 home (pack together with the system). It also has multi fingers function on touch pad (single-2-3 fingers stimultes drags, mouse right click, enlarge pictures..etc)
the only drawback i discovered is the inadequate clearance for the keyboard adjacent buttons( I was familiar with my old DELL Inspiron). How ever if you use it more frequent you will feel ok plus the smooth and soft key whe pressed.
I do really love this N43S! you feel it- fullfill your entertainment and graphics richness
btw just to point out that in your article you wrote that this model gives you a 550M graphics card, I suppose you mean 540M?

Hi keeman, i wish to know the difference between A series and N series. I am comparing A53SV and N53SV(same as yours)..but i dont know which one more suitable for me. I use it mainly for gaming and movie purpose.

I guess not big difference in terms of specs. The difference is the design (look and feel) plus the speaker. N53SV is powered by Bang & Olufsen ICEPower. And audio for both models are damn good actually, it just that the speaker for N53SV is strategically placed for better surround.
Is the quality of sound noticeable compared to A series? I think this is the only reason i choose N over A..
Actually, not major difference, since A series is powered by Altec Lansing. But the sound quality is better in N series, which is what they are build for.

Yes, Jay Chou version is the same, just with his design. But i do recommend Jay Chou's version since it's newer and almost the same price.
The problem is Jay chou version only having 14" display :( it's quite small for me ...
Oh yeah, the screen is smaller...If you want bigger screen, then go for N53SV, perhaps look for higher spec if available now.
