EPL New Season (2007/08) – My Verdicts

Alright, no more dramas, no more talk shows, it’s time for English Premier League (EPL) football matches again!! Yippie!! Now it’s going to be the greatest season ever with the big Three spending their money, acquiring new bloods to mount a serious challenge for the EPL title. Liverpool, Chelsea and Man United all have spent more than 20 million pounds to bring in new players, with of course the Red Devils being the hottest money splashing club ever! But what will happen to Arsenal? After Henry left for Barcelona, Wenger only brought in two key signings, Eduardo da Silva and Bakary Sagna, apart from Fabianski as a backup keeper. If you’re thinking Arsenal have no chance to fight for the title, think again! The lack of pressure and expectations will give Arsenal young guns a better chance to show their best. Henry’s departure is not really a loss as you can see last season, with his lack of matches plus van Persie long absense from injury, Arsenal still managed to get into the fourth spot, with similar points as Liverpool, not to mention how the super young guns made it to the final or the League Cup. Remember, they fight against Chelsea multi-millions signings!

I would see Arsenal young guns flourish this season with Gallas and Gilberto as the stewards to inject some experience into the team. With a little bit of luck especially with no big injuries, i won’t be surprised to see Arsenal in the Top 2 spot and of course do well in the champion’s league. Below are my verdicts for the coming season:

1. Manchester United – Sir Alex has indeed bring in more-than-enough strike force into the club. But i guess he has forgotten another important aspect of his squad, which is the defence. Frankly, Sir Alex should have invested in signing two top-class defenders rather than another striker like Tevez. Vidic seems the only better defender so far in the United defence, with Ferdinand, Brown, Silvestre often lack consistency.

2. Chelsea – Mourinho has a serious injury list to worry about. Despite lack of activity in the transfer market, i would say Chelsea can still fight for the title as long as the key players are fully fit especially for Drogba and Terry, the two most instrumental figures in the squad.

3. Liverpool – I don’t know about Liverpool. They often spend a lot and do well in Europe but not for the EPL. Perhaps, Benitez should reconsider his rotation policy which often cause the team valuable points. Fernando Torres arrival would not guarantee them a title, as to me, he is over-rated. Crouch would have been a better striker if he was given more matches.

4. Tottenham Hotspurs – Another Arsenal’s rival which have spend millions, bringing in players like Darrent Bent. If there is one thing i want to tell Martin Jol, it would be “You need more than just money to win the league!”.

5. Newcastle United – Big Sam has stated his ambition to bring the Magpies to greater heights. But well, he has to wait another few years to do so!
