Streamyx rolled out its Super Upgrade deals last few weeks ago, in an attempt to increase its market share in the Malaysian broadband war. No doubt, Streamyx is still holding a large piece of the pie since a large area of Malaysia is still not well covered with other alternatives like WiMAX or 3.5G. So, for those loyal Streamyx subscribers who have been using its service for more than1 year, are the super upgrade deals worth your money?
I’m going to do a comparison based on several popular packages. But before I go further, let me remind you that "kbps" and "Mbps" in Streamyx packages are referred to "kilobits per second" and "megabits per second" respectively and NOT "kilobytes" or "megabytes". In other words, if you subscribed to 1Mbps package, you’ll get a download speed of about 128Kilobytes per second. Some people has come to me and complained that their download speed never reaches 1 megabytes per second despite spending money on the 1Mbps package! Well, i think many are confused with this, so better clarify earlier. And by the way, FREE 4 months doesn’t mean you pay nothing for 4 months! It means the upgraded price is the same as your existing one for 4 months! (For those upgrading to 1Mbps package from 512Kbps and to 2Mbps from 1Mbps – Thanks to Eina for pointing this out).
Okay, here are the comparison chart that I have made for the two popular packages (512kbps and 1Mbps).
The blocks in the same colour means same pricing. This would give you an overall picture of how the packages are priced. You should noticed that upgrading to 2Mbps and 4Mbps from both 512kbps and 1Mbps requires you to pay the same amount. The monthly price for 2Mbps for this Super Deal promotion is RM99 for the first 4 months and RM110 after that. This is low as the normal pricing for the 2Mbps package is RM188. On the other hand, for the 4Mbps package, the pricing is pitched at RM130 starting the 1st month of upgrade, which is extremely low considering that the normal pricing is RM268. So you can see that Streamyx is targetting more users to upgrade to 2Mbps and 4Mbps. However, not all areas provides access to 2Mbps and 4Mbps connections. Technical testing for availability is needed.
As for 512kbps user who want to upgrade to 1Mbps, you’ll saved RM17 after the 4th month in comparison with the normal pricing for the package. I think it is worth the upgrade since you need to pay only an extra of RM5 for double speed.
Well, if you compare the 4Mbps upgrade pricing to other WiMAX or broadband packages, you’ll definitely agree that this upgrade worth every penny! Since WiMAX and other mobile broadband includes a Fair Usage cap (not that Streamyx don’t but at least it doesn’t cap too low like 5GB!!), it’s right time to upgrade! For 512kbps subscribers, it’s a good time to upgrade to 1Mbps!!
Upgrading to 2Mbps and 4Mbps from 1Mbps is also recommended for those who can spend a little extra every month since the Super Deal pricing is much lower than the standard pricing. But again, it depends on whether you really need that extra speed or if there are no other better alternatives available. For me, GO FOR THE UPGRADE! And Jangan POTONG Dulu!

I think 512 is already good enough.. but I just upgraded my package to the RM90 a month, inclusive of monthly phone rental. If you upgrade, you should also consider the monthly rental RM26 TM impose...
Yeah, if you go for Combo packages you might save a little more. 512 Kbps is really enough if you're not sharing. Like my case, I'm sharing, so 1Mbps is barely enough. Hahaha
And yeah, I didn't include the combo packages or rental part since for those upgrading, the rental will still be the same and it differs accordingly. My rental is only RM20 as the exchange line capacity is below 1000.
I still don't understand this statement:
"And by the way, FREE 4 months doesn’t mean you pay nothing for 4 months! It means the upgraded price is the same as your existing one for 4 months!"
Say you are on the RM77 package and you want to upgrade to the 4Mbps package. The link you gave says you need to pay RM130 from the first month onwards. So, how is that the same as your existing price?
@Eina, you got me there! Haha. But thanks for pointing it out. Actually the so-called "Free 4 Months" campaign is for those upgrading to 1Mbp package from 512Kbps and to 2Mbps from 1Mbps. I forget to mention that. And the 4Mbps is not available in all areas, but still RM130 is low compared to WiMAX. I do think TM shouldn't used the "Free 4 Months" thingy, as it's confusing to a lot of people.
combo lg cun bru. br je upgrade pakej :)
I think TM forgot to mention it! Their advertising certainly borders on being false.
Yeah...but i guess most ads are misleading in one way or another...
I'm out of the topic... Today, the internet was disconnected without any early notice from them... It started at 6.30am like that until 6 or 7pm just now... So pissed with them...
Did you make a report? So far, TM's record with me is good! Haha. The last time i reported, it took them 10 mins to call back and rectify the problem. Then connection back to normal.
Hi KeeMan. I agree about the fair usage policy. The only thing stopping me from "potong" is the low bandwidth cap policy of the competition.
