Last month, SquareTrade published their survey results to find out the reliability of laptops over a period of 3 years. The major results revealed that 31% of laptop owners (in America) reported a failure over 3 years of ownership. Two-thirds of this failure (20.4%) came from hardware malfunctions, and one-third (10.6%) was reported as accidental damage.
Apart from that, the research also look at the reliability results across the famous brands of laptop in the world. And look at the chart below:
The results in "blue" shows the reported 2-year failure rate (excluding accidental damages). You’ll see that Asus and Toshiba has the least reported failure while Acer, Gateway and HP were the highest three! These are all hardware damages, and not software related. Even Apple users reported more failures than Asus or Toshiba.
Personally, I have always placed Asus and Toshiba as number 1 for full-fledged laptops. For mini laptops or netbooks, the failure rates should be about the same.
However, this study only covers laptops sold in America and the results might differ in other parts of the world. To a certain extent, It does provide a good indication of the brand’s reliability as a whole. So what do you think?
