Sherlock Holmes (2009) – It’s Elementary, My Dear!
Review Score:

My second movie of the month at MBO Cinema, The Spring, Sarawak. And I have to admit, the main reason for me to go watch this movie is because I am an avid fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his huge collection of Sherlock Holmes stories (56 short stories, four novels). There had been quite a number of movie versions based on his tales on this world-renowned detective but I would say Guy Ritchie’s version of Sherlock Holmes (2009) is rather "elementary" or poor to the extent that the story line could have been better if not the same as the Sir Arthur’s portrayal of Sherlock.

I do feel that there is a sense of imitating The Da Vinci Code from the way certain scenes were shot. It was rather face-paced with little attention paid to the development of the story. It was action, action and action. Sherlock Holmes turned into a iron-man liked action hero more than the talented detective that he was supposed to be. But I guess, this is the demand of modern film, and Guy Ritchie knows that well.  Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes) and Jude Law (Mr. Watson) combined to form a dynamic duo in this movie though I prefer Hugh Jackman to be Sherlock (as his character in The Prestige).

The ending was also poor, perhaps another attempt by Ritchie to pave way for a sequel, Sherlock Holmes 2. The let down of this movie is in its story but if you’re looking for action-packed movie, then this is for you! For me, it’s a good watch but not an award-winning production.

Agreed. I wouldn’t even give it a three star like you did! I never knew that Sherlock Holmes could do kung fu! The story line was ridiculous. Tak, talk and more talk, BORING! The plot was a reflection of the types of Superman, Batman and the likes. I mean, someone back then trying to rule the world? Oh, come on! I thought the British would have been proud then to own an entire Empire. I wasted NZD 10 for it!
