Dikir Barat

Dikir Barat

Was re-organising my photo album when this picture reminds me of my active participation in UNIMAS Bayu Dikir Barat team. That was way back in 1st and 2nd years. It reminds me of all my friends from Kelantan and Terengganu that has made up a magnificient dikir barat group that has won recognition from various parties. The songs that we used to sing suddenly rang my ears. Wow, really enjoy my time during 1st and 2nd years, we “rock” the DK almost every Saturday night. Haha. And for those of you who don’t know, dikir barat is a form of group singing that is very popular in Northern Malaysia northeastern (Peninsular) Malaysia, in particular Kelantan. Don’t be prejudice about the name though, as dikir barat can be performed in any language that you can think of. In fact, it is now very popular throughout Malaysia. Go to any state, you’ll definitely find a dikir barat team. I’ve been to SMK Kundasang, Sabah and was surprised that they have a Dikir Barat team. What’s more, even in UK, you can get a dikir barat performance! Don’t believe me? Click Here. Look at the performance by students of various races (British included), it’s really captivating! Now, that’s what i call national identity!
